Tour highlights: Ha Long Bay Situated in the Gulf of Tonkin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, "Descending Dragon Bay' or Ha Long Bay, is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Approximately 1,553 km2, it includes numerous islets, most of which are limestone and schist. The karst rock formations have developed over 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate. There is huge geographical diversity here, which has led to biodiversity, with ecosystems of salt water-flooded forests, coral reefs, and tropical forests hosting thousands of species of animal and plant life. Evidence suggests the presence of pre-historical human beings in this area tens of thousands years ago. Most of the islets are uninhabited due to the nature of the karst structures. The bay has the aura of an ancient forgotten world; as you journey around the bay seeing the stones from different vantage points their formations appear to change. Spanning the coastline of Bai Chay Beach, the best way to enjoy the bay is to travel out on a junk-styled boat from which you can swim, dive, fish and explore the endless caves and grottoes. This 15 day southeast asian bicycle tour explores the mountainous regions of two magical countries: Vietnam and Laos. Our adventure begins in Vietnam, a land of shimmering rice fields, lush jungles, and radiant beaches. Beginning in Hanoi, we spend our trip exploring the lesser known northwestern region of Vietnam, home to spectacular mountains and valleys. We ride amidst the crests of Indochina’s highest peak, Mount Fansipan, and along the fascinating hill station of Sapa, a colonial retreat created by the French. Crossing into Laos, we cycle riverside where we venture into remote villages far from the tourist track.

Hanoi is a unique city with tree-lined boulevards, French colonial architecture, peaceful lakes, and Oriental temples. The Vietnamese capital has many cultural and historic sites, and we will have a half day guided sightseeing tour to some of the many highlights. We start with a visit to the nearby mausoleum complex of the historic figure and father of modern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh (viewed from outside), and walk through the former president’s gardens, including a visit to his house on stilts where he lived from 1958 to 1969. After this, depending on time, we will visit one or two of the many pagodas found around the central Hoan Kiem Lake. We take lunch in the old quarter, after which you have the afternoon to explore this bustling area. After an early evening meal, we go to the train station to board the sleeper tain. The train is a very civilized affair with compartments sleeping 4 and a refreshment carriage serving food and drink.

Day 5: Lao Cai to Sapa

On arrival in Lao Cai around 07.00 hrs, we meet our support vehicle and make the short 50-min transfer up to the former hill station of Sapa (1,450 m), where we have breakfast at our hotel. Late morning, we ride to get those legs moving. We cycle from the hotel for 4 km on a tarmac road and branch off at Lao Chai junction to cycle downhill on jeep track to a Black Hmong village. We ride 2 km of single track past rice paddies. When we reach Ta Van village, home to the Red Dzao people, we can stroll around the village and learn about their unique culture and building style before having lunch. We continue our cycle journey to Thanh Kim village, riding on gentle hills and a tarmac road. The village is situated in a high mountain area, and from the Thanh Kim, we have panoramic views of the Ban Ho valley. Depending on time and energy levels, we can ride back up to Sapa or transfer back

Day 6: Sapa Loop

We cycle 4 km on a tarmac road, then turn left, and enjoy a 3-km off-road ride along a hillside. The undulating ride along a dirt track has a few short challenging hills but with beautiful mountain scenery. We cycle downhill to Ma Tra village, home to the Black Hmong. Here we have lunch, before we continue cycling on a rough track looping to Ta Phin village and will experience dramatic mountain scenery. We take a break in Ta Phin village, which is one of the most beautiful villages in Sapa, and our guide will take you around and introduce you to the culture and customs of the Red Dzao people. From Ta Phin, there are several alternative tracks that loop and drop down to the main Lao Chai road. Depending on weather conditions, these can be muddy and slippery but are great fun to ride. Once we get to the main road, we can transfer back to Sapa or cycle the extra 15 km. Due to the nature of the trail, the ride cannot be supported the whole way by jeep, but there will be spots along the trail where we can rendezvous with the support vehicle. Late afternoon can be spent exploring Sapa before we meet up for dinner.

Day 7: Sapa – Tran Ton Pass – Tam Duong – Lai Chau

We ride out of Sapa and complete the 15-km road climb up to Tram Ton Pass – the highest road pass in Vietnam at 2,000 m. We then have a superb 25-km descent into a beautiful valley. The countryside is truly wonderful as we pass tea plantations, and all inhabitants are from minority tribes. The weather always seems to get clearer this side of the mountains, and if we look back, we should get views of Fansipan (3,143 m), the highest mountain in Indochina. At the small town of Tam Duong, we have lunch and then turn left off the main road to cycle 28 km on a lovely country lane through the remote villages of Ban Hon and Ban Giang. We have now left any sign of other western tourists and are in a land of rice paddies, small coffee plantations, and sharp limestone cliffs. We finish in the new city of Lai Chau.

The first half of the road is amid mountains and rice terraces; the second one is along the Nam Na River with towering mountains on both sides of the road. The afternoon ride to Muong Lay is overall flat with a few slight dips and rises to keep things interesting, The town is at the confluence of the Nam Na River, the Nam Lay River, and the Da River.

At the top, we take a break at a well-located tea shop for refreshments. The average gradient of the pass is relatively easy, averaging around 6-8%. Dropping down to a plateau around 400 m, we stop regularly at some of the last hilltribe villages and have lunch in a local restaurant, where our guide can introduce you to the local customs. There is another short final climb up to a 650-m pass before we prepare a broad smile to greet the kids as we cycle through paddy fields on the final flat stretch into the historic town of Dien Bien Phu.

We explore war history in Dien Bien Phu. Our first stops will be the excellent new war museum, which offers good insight into the climactic battle in 1954 when the Viet Minh communist revolutionary forces defeated the French Union forces in the Dien Bien Phu, leading to Vietnam gaining its independence from colonial rule. Other stops on the bikes will include de Castries’ bunker and Glory Statue before we stop for lunch. We then head out of town and cycle towards Muong Phang Commune to visit the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Headquarters. Shortly into our ride the climbing begins, which lasts for about 15 km, but there is a transfer option. Then, our route takes us among forests and a large reservoir, which provides water to two hydroelectric projects. We cycle back down to Dien Bien Phu, and you are free to explore the city. We swap crews, pick up new hire bikes, and begin the journey to the riverside town of Muang Khoua. The ride is beautiful as we descend at first on a recently built but very quiet road, cycling through remote villages mainly comprised of Red or Black Thai ethnic tribes. After lunch, there is a short climb for 10 km, before dropping down to Tat Muang Khoua (390 m) a small sleepy market town built on a steep hillside at the confluence of two rivers, offering plenty of great views.

Day 12: Muang Khoua – Muang Ngoy

No journey through the emerald lands of Laos is complete without a traditional long boat journey. Today, we kick back and relax as we have a day off the bikes and voyage to one of Laos prettiest riverside villages, Muang Ngoy. Inaccessible by road, our 4-hour boat trip provides a unique experience to watch the daily life on the river as we greet fisherman, traders, and cheeky children along the way. After 2.5 hrs, we stop off at a local village and go for a short 2-km hike to another riverside village that is a centre for local handicrafts and excellent for souvenirs. Lunch by the water and then re-join our boats for the final cruise to Muang Ngoy. Surrounded by jungle, sheer limestone cliffs carpeted in vegetation, and looking down onto the river, this is an excellent spot to chill out. It has only recently been hooked up to electricity and some small restaurants and bars have opened, the first real coffee machine only just arrived! On arrival, we check into a small bungalow complex where the rest of the afternoon is free to spend at your leisure. Hike to nearby ethnic Lao villages, explore caves where locals lived during the "secret war", or just relax on the river. We meet up for a riverside dinner.

Day 13 Muang Ngoy - Nong Kiau

After a short 15 min boat transfer to the western side of the river, we re-join our bikes and ride down to Nong Kiau, primarily on dirt tracks. This section will have no support vehicle. We cycle through some ethnic Hmong villages, giving you plenty to see along the way. This undulating route will be jeep-width initially, but narrows to single track in sections. It is not very technical, but fast flowing hard pack with some shallow stream crossings, and should be well within the capabilities of anyone on this trip. The last 6 km are on tarmac into the tourist town of Nong Kiau, where we have lunch and check into our comfortable and charming guesthouse that overlooks the Nam Ou River. Anyone who wishes to jump on the boat instead of cycling is welcome to do so, it will be bringing the luggage down anyway. In the afternoon, there is a chance to cycle to the fascinating limestone caves where villages sheltered from the US carpet bombings in the “secret war”

Day 14: Nong Kiau – Luang Prabang

The last long ride of the bike tour! Cycling a relatively quiet undulating road, we head west along the Nam Ou River, which makes for a very scenic ride. The road undulates the whole way with some short climbs that never ascend more than 50 m at a time. It makes for a fast pace, and although it is a reasonable distance, it is satisfying to cycle into the beautiful and historic town of Luang Prabang to end our epic journey. Situated on a peninsula between the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers, Luang Prabang is well-known for its numerous Buddhist temples and monasteries. Every morning, hundreds of monks from various monasteries walk through the streets collecting alms. Once we reach this historic UNESCO World Heritage Site, we head to our hotel and freshen up for our farewell dinner.

12 Day Hill Tribes of Northeast Vietnam Cycling Adventure

Meet at the group hotel in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. A group transfer from Hanoi Airport is provided. We will aim to do the bike fitting before lunch and then, in the afternoon, we will head out with our guide on a walking tour of the Old Quarter. The Old Quarter, a maze of 35 streets, is essentially the original pre-20th century Hanoi. The names of the streets tell a fascinating story about the history of the city, prior to the modern age each street was named for the particular trade for which it was (and sometimes still is) known; look out for Hang Gai (Silk Street) and Hang Bac (Silver Street). We'll also make a stop at Hoan Kiem Lake (Lake of the Restored Sword), the epicentre of old Hanoi. We will also stop at a shop where we can learn about traditional medicine and at an authentic Hanoian house, where we can enjoy a cup of local tea. Afterwards we head to a local restaurant where we can enjoy a welcome dinner to celebrate the start of our holiday. Our first chance to sample the deliciously fragrant Vietnamese cuisine and test out our chopstick skills!

🔔 Bikes

Because some people can't imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, we do not provide them as part of this tour. However, you can hire bikes locally for the price listed in the tour pricing section. The bikes are well-known makes of mountain bikes with lightweight alloy frames, 24- to 27-speed gearing, v-brakes, and Shimano components and front suspension. If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is a mountain bike, Trek X-Caliber7, preferably with front suspension, in good mechanical order.

🔔 Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

🔔 Safety

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

🔔 Guides

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is 9 people or more we will add another guide to the tour. All our guides are well informed in the history, culture and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en route.

THE NITTY GRITTY

LAOS

💧 Passports and Visas

All nationalities require a visa for Laos. You have two options to get a single-entry tourist visa (max 30 days): 1) E-Visa or 2) Visa on Arrival. Both are very straightforward processes, though we suggest procuring an E-Visa in advance as it will save you time on arrival in Laos. Apply via this website. If you prefer to do a Visa On Arrival, make sure you have the required documents prepared (including 2 passport-sized photographs and the exact amount for the visa fee in USD). See here for more information.

Please Note: While E-Visa and Visa on Arrival are available for all international airports and major land borders, some border posts do not yet accept them. Therefore, if your tour crosses into Laos from Vietnam through a more remote border post, obtaining your visa through a Laotian Embassy or Consulate in advance may be required. If that is the case, we will let you know at the time of booking.

💧 Health

We recommend that you visit a travel medical doctor and ask about the following vaccinations: typhoid, polio, tetanus and hepatitis A. A certificate for Yellow Fever is required when arriving from an infected area within six days.

💧 Weather

Laos has a tropical climate with fairly high humidity. There are three seasons: from March to June it is hot and dry, with temperatures between 27C and 40C (80-104F), with night temperatures in the 20C/75F). The rainy season is from June to October. The cooler season, is from November to February, with average temperatures between 20C and 30C (70- 86F). It can get a little cold at night at higher elevations year round so bring a light fleece for the evenings.

💧 Food

Meals are included as per the itinerary where B = breakfast, L = lunch, D =dinner. Most meals are local Laos food and feature noodles, curries and soups. Lao cuisine is very similar to Thai food and we make sure you sample as much variety as possible. Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.

💧 Drink

Keeping you completely hydrated is a job we take very seriously. Cold water, some energy-restoring local fruit and soft drinks are included in the tour price while riding. Soft drinks and other beverages during meals are not included. Beer is freely available everywhere, but is NOT included in the price.

💧 Solo Travelers

SpiceRoads does not require you to pay a surcharge for travelling alone. We will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveller of the same gender and if we can not match you up we will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is listed above.

💧 Extra Expenses

We recommend that you tuck away a few extra dollars, perhaps US$10, for incidentals. It is customary to tip local tour guides and drivers, however, the amount you give should be dependent on the level of service you receive. As a general guide we suggest US$3-4 per person per day is appropriate.

💧 Money

The official national currency in Laos is the kip, however, Thai baht and US dollars are also used, especially in larger cities and towns. In smaller towns and villages, kip is usually preferred. There are now a few ATMs in Laos, but they are not widespread and are operational only sporadically. The best overall exchange rates are those offered at the BCEL (Banque pour le Commerce Extérieur Lao). Licensed moneychangers rates are similar to banks Spend all your kip before you leave as no one will exchange it for you once you leave the country!

VIETNAM

💧 Passports and Visas

Vietnam e-Visa is available to 80 nationalities. Please check this link to determine if your country is on the list. To apply for an e-visa please visit the official government website here and follow the required steps and make payment. You can apply for a single entry visa up to 30 days. Multiple entry e-visas are not currently available. For peace of mind, we suggest applying for your e-visa as early as possible, and no later than 2 weeks before your expected arrival in Vietnam. While processing time is generally no more than 1-3 working days (not including weekends and Vietnamese holidays), it is wise to give yourself some buffer time in case there are any issues.

If your nationality is not on the list for e-visa eligibility, or you need options for longer stays or multiple entries, then you may consider Visa on Arrival. The process for this is more complicated than e-visa and requires the acquisition of a visa letter prior to arrival. Please see here for a detailed overview.

If you are joining our "Saigon to Bangkok" or "Saigon to Siem Reap" tour, when you are applying for your e-visa, please select Song Tien Landport as the exit point. This refers to the river crossing at Chao Doc.

💧 Health

Recommended vaccinations are typhoid, polio, tetanus and hepatitis A. A certificate for Yellow Fever is required when arriving from an infecte

Mountion Biking Adventure

TRIP PROFILE

Our tour is the ultimate mountain bike adventure. After an overnight train ride from Hanoi, we ride up to 633 km through Indochina’s most spectacular mountain scenery. Although the riding is tough, it is very enjoyable, and anyone who enjoys hill riding and remote valleys will love this tour. The views are really fantastic, and the people are extraordinarily colourful and friendly.

This trip will have support from a mix of jeeps, motorbikes, and air-con buses. Due to the nature of some of the trails, the jeep cannot follow, then we will have motorbike support, and during these motor bike sections, we will have rendezvous points with the support vehicle.

Suitability: This trip is tough due to the nature of the area. It is a very mountainous region, and we must cross many valleys and mountains to get to Dien Bien Phu and then onwards to Luang Prabang. The tour starts with some easier rides but builds up to some tough all-day riding. This trip should only be attempted by fit and experienced cyclists.

Biking Conditions: The roads are a mixture of good asphalt, broken or potholed roads, and some off-road cycling tracks. While the off-road riding is not that technical, some experience will help. Support is always available when required.
